XIV.
She cuddles closer to him.
„You mean about things going to be fine?“
„Yes, angel.“
„Look, David – I’m no fool and I had lots of time to deal with all my emotional chaos during therapy. I don’t believe in fairy-tales. And like in the movies – there isn’t always a Happy End. So whatever you want to tell me now – don’t be afraid – just say it.“
He puts his arm around her shoulder, under her head – pulling her face gently in his direction.
„The last four weeks haven’t been just tough for you, Ciara. You have no idea – and I don’t want you to know much – yet a few things.“ He swallows. „I can’t go on like this – and you awell. You deserve more than just an affair – and I can’t give myself to you completely. And yes – I should have known from the beginning.“
„We haven’t exactly done anything wrong, David. It was perhaps meant to be. Like a detour on our ways towards our final destinations. I see that very clearly now. And I see you know aswell what I’m talking about.“ She touches the pendant down his throat.
„We are just two pieces of a way bigger puzzle. We can link, yet we will never complete the whole thing. And I can take it like that. As it will not change our honest feelings for us – as it’s not just sex that gives us this connection. I will miss that incredibly hot love making with you though – gosh!“
Now she’s done it! He can’t hold back his tears any longer.
„Hey, David, my love – it’s not the end of the world – and I’m way from being a good samaritan here. I want you to be happy again. And I know that it’s not me who’s the missing link. I can only be happy again if I let you go – to your family.“
„So I don’t have to be worried about you?“
„No, that’s the last burden I want to put onto your shoulders. I’m better now – and I wouldn’t have been able to get that far without your help.“
He takes her hands into his, his slender fingers closing around hers.
„If I might knock at your door every now and then – and this will not going to happen a lot – will you let me in?“
„As you will not really leave my life I think I can do that.“
They lay there, next to each other for another endless period of time, just listening to each others heartbeat.
„It’s time for me to leave you now, angel.“
„I know, David.“
He kisses her for the last time, with all his heart and soul, tasting the salt of her tears on her lips.
