Part 9
Dave was in a strange place. He knew it all too well: cold, dark, dangerous, and yet so alluring. A hissing voice called out to him, promising him sweet oblivion and even though he didn’t want to follow the voice, his feet didn’t obey, but walked right into the darkness. It was getting colder. He couldn’t see anything and yet was pulled in further. There were menacing voices he couldn’t understand. As he walked farther in the darkness, they got louder and started to scream, hurting his in his ears. He put his hands on them, trying to shut them out, hearing the blood pound frantically through his body.
Suddenly cold hands grabbed after him. A hand closed around his foot and he lost balance, stumbling and falling. He was waiting for the impact, for hitting the ground, but it never came. Instead he was falling, falling faster and faster, his stomach lurching, the hands still grabbing and tearing at him. He opened his mouth to scream out in pain as the hands tore in his flesh, but no sound would come out. He could hardly breathe by now, he was falling so fast. His heart was painfully pounding in his chest and he was scared now, scared out of his wits.
The voices were screaming and laughing so loud now, it hurted his ears. He felt coldness creep into his body and tears ran down his cheeks.
Then there was another voice. A soft one. And it was calling out to him.
“David! David!”
With a start he was back in reality, staring into her concerned moonlit face. He was sitting up in bed, his body covered in sweat, breathing heavily, the blood pounding in his ears. His mind was still so full of the images of his dream; he bent his head and shook it. It had been too real and so violent.
He felt her gently lay her hand on his shoulder and the love he felt in her touch made him shiver uncontrollably.
She sat there, horrified. His trashing and turning restlessly in bed had woken her up. He had moaned and his breathing got so quick that she feared he would start to hyperventilate any second now. Then he had cried out and shot up in bed. And now he sat here, shivering, with his head bend, totally shaken. She didn’t know what to do. So she reached out and pulled him into her arms.
He felt warmth rush through him at her touch and he slid his arms around her, clinging to her desperately, his sweaty head buried in her chest, still shaking like a leaf.
She held him, kissing his hair, her hands gently rubbing his back, trying to soothe him.
“Shhh, baby, shhh,” she said quietly, over and over again.
Her body warmed him; the love and concern in her voice shied away the memories of the dream; her hands on his back and her steady heart beat slowly calmed him down. He was no longer shaking and after a few long moments, his breathing was normal again. He relaxed his grip on her.
“Are you okay? Do you need anything? A glass of water?”
He pulled away at her questions, shaking his head no and looking at her with pleading eyes.
“Just hold me, please.”
The pain and horror she saw in his eyes made her heart cringe. She wanted so much to know what just had happened, but she knew all he needed now was a comforting touch. She lay back down, opening her arms for him.
He gave her a grateful look, not able to find words at the moment. Then he lay down, his head on her chest, listening to her heart beat, feeling her chest rise and fall with each breath she took. Her arms went around him, holding him. He closed his eyes, letting her sweep him away into her safe haven and he soon fell asleep.
She lay awake for a long time, watching him, praying for relief and peaceful sleep for his tortured soul.

Dave woke, feeling as if he had partied all night and only caught about one hour of sleep. Something was off with his pillow. His pillow! He opened his eyes, seeing her soft skin he was sleeping on. Mind you, he was very comfortable in the position he was in right now, lying half on her, but this surely wasn’t as comfortable for her. He lifted his head and was met by her worried eyes.
“Hey.”
“Hey,” he said sleepily.
He suddenly felt ashamed of what had happened last night, that she had seen him like that. Quickly, he averted his eyes, pulled away and sat up on the edge of the bed, his back turned to her, staring to the window.
But she would have none of that. She was worried sick about him and she knew this was important, so she wasn’t going to let it slip so easily.
He heard the sheets rustle and then felt her hand on his shoulder.
“Don’t turn away from me, Dave,” she said quietly. “No secrets… that door swings both ways.”
He bent his head to his chest and snorted, closing his eyes as he felt her embrace him from behind.
“What if I know you won’t be able to bear it?” It sounded lost.
He turned his head to look at her and was met by her sincere eyes.
“Let me be the judge of what I’m able to bear and what not,” she said quietly.
He shook off her hands and got up, running a hand through his hair. When he gazed at her again, he looked sombre.
“It’s not nice, luv. It’s not nice at all. It’ll scare you and you’ll run away.” His voice was dangerously low now.
“I’m not going to run, David.” It was a quiet remark. “Have a little faith in me.”
“It’s not a question of whether or not I have faith in you,” he started, getting angrier by the second. “It’s something ugly, luv. Really ugly. Can you handle that?”
She stuck out her chin, challengingly. “Can you?”
He sighed in frustration, turning away from her, running his fingers once again through his hair.
She got up and placed a hand on his back, tentatively. This time he didn’t shake free.
“Do you remember how it was being at home all by yourself as a child?” she started. “No one’s there, it’s night and there’s a thunderstorm outside going on. You’re scared at the slightest sound. What looks so familiar during the day now looks threatening and the shadows are darker. There are demons and monsters all over the place and they’re closing in on you. Do you remember how much safer you felt when you had someone there with you?”
She now embraced him, resting her cheek on his back. His hands covered hers, intertwining their fingers and he closed his eyes as her words touched his soul.
“The demons and monsters will always be there and still scare the shit out of you. But you’re not alone and you’ll feel a bit more courageous to face them. You have someone to take on the demons with. Someone to hold your hand when it gets really bad. You said you want me completely and entirely, Dave.”
Her voice was breaking and she pressed a kiss onto his back. “Please, don’t push me away now. Let me take on the demons with you.”
He turned in her arms, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He lifted his hand to caress her cheek.
“You shouldn’t have to.”
“We all have demons.”
He sighed. “It won’t be nice.”
“I know,” she smiled warmly. “My demons can be ugly, too.”
He laughed quietly, his heart aching and feeling lighter at the same time. He bent his head, resting it on her shoulder, kissing her there.
“Thank you,” he whispered into her ear, enjoying their embrace.
She swallowed the lump in her throat. They stood like that for a long moment, simply feeling the other’s presence. Then she gently pulled away. His hands on her arms stopped her.
“Where are you going?” he murmured, pulling her back to him and kissing her lips.
She groaned and pulled away again. “I’m going to let you sleep some more. I’ll take a shower and get us some breakfast. Sounds good?”
He had to admit, he was still tired. But he dreaded sleeping without her, so he tried to pull her along. She swatted his hands off, laughing at his pout and disappeared in the bathroom.

When she emerged half an hour later, he was sleeping peacefully on his stomach, sheets pooling around his hips, his hand resting where she had slept. Her heart was swelling with love for him. She had to hold back to not let her hand run through his hair. He looked absolutely gorgeous.
She tiptoed out of the room and quietly closed the door behind her. Then she searched his fridge and cabins, before she put on her shoes and jacket, grabbed his keys and left the flat.
She needed some alone time now, to think about what had happened and to sort out her feelings. Undoubtedly, she would stand by his side through thick and thin and she had meant every word she had said. However, if she wanted to fight the demons with him, she’d need to gather strength, so he could rely on her. And he would put up a fight, he would try to push her away in any possible way until he was absolutely certain she would not run, no matter what. She stepped out into the morning air of New York, a cold wind blowing in her face.

When Dave woke again, he felt much better. The bedroom door was closed, but he could smell the coffee and food and it made his stomach grumble. He heard faint bustling in the kitchen and smiled. Yawning and stretching, he got up and walked into the bathroom, taking a pee and turning on the shower. He placed his hands on the wall, letting the hot water run over his back and wash away the tension he had felt there.
Afterwards, he got out, towelled off, shaved and brushed his teeth. His mind was replaying what she had said to him this morning. She would not run. He went back into the bedroom and put on some clothes, before he quietly opened the door and walked into the kitchen.
There she leaned on the counter, reading the newspaper that lay in front of her, munching an apple and stirring some eggs in the pan with the other hand. She was immersed in some article and didn’t pay attention. Suddenly she tore her hand from the pan, hissing.
“Ouch! Dammit!”
Within an instant, he was by her side, taking her hand into his, turning her around to look at the wound. It was shining in an angry red half-way across her palm. He quickly turned on the tab to let cool water run over the burn on her hand.
“And there I thought I was accident-prone,” he smiled, gently kissing her temple.
She merely gulped, feeling all weak in the knees at his touch. He made her sit down at the table and got out the first aid kit, expertly seeing to the wound and, after having put a band aid on it, kissing her hand, looking up.
“Better?”
She stared at his lips. His gorgeous, delicious, luscious, soft and very kissable lips.
“Mhm, thank you. But I hurt real bad here,” she said, pointing to her mouth.
He rose an eyebrow, trying to suppress a smile.
“Really? You mean… here?” he murmured.
He leaned in to kiss the corner of her mouth and watched as her eyes fluttered shut.
“A bit more to the left,” she whispered.
She could feel his hot breath puffing on her lips.
“Here?” he asked huskily, before his lips claimed hers.
It was a sweet, slow kiss. He cupped her face in his hands, angling her head and deepening the kiss. She tasted of apple and when she whimpered at the touch of their tongues, he felt his stomach lurch. He took his time to explore her mouth, his tongue teasing, challenging and soothing hers. When he broke the kiss, he looked down at her face, smiling. She looked like she had been thoroughly kissed.
She still had her eyes closed, her hands clasped around his forearms, her lips red and slightly swollen, her breathing shallow, cheeks flushed. When she looked up, her eyes were hooded and the fire burning in them made his heart thump rapidly against his chest. He smiled and gave her a quick peck, before he sat back in the chair.
“What’s for breakfast?”
He grinned as she stuck her tongue out to him and got up.
She brought out two plates from the kitchen, placing one in front of him. She had arranged fresh fruit, wholemeal bread and scrambled eggs with vegetables on it nicely.
He looked down at the food and then back up at her.
“I see you’re taking good care of me,” he remarked, leaning over the table to kiss her.

After breakfast, they went out. Dave wanted to show her an exhibition of a friend of his in a gallery. They stood there, his hand in hers, looking at the wonderful paintings and photographs, one more erotic than the other. Her mind was in overdrive by what she saw and feeling him next to her. The last painting showed two lovers, head thrown back in ecstasy. He stood behind her, his hands on her hips, chin resting on her shoulder, watching her as she let the painting work its magic on her.
He could feel her shudder as he softly breathed in her ear.
“Wonderful, isn’t it?” he asked hotly.
A shiver ran down her spine and she closed her eyes, feeling him press into him. Obviously, she wasn’t the only one turned on.
“Mhm,” she murmured, her eyes closing as his hands wandered under her jacket and under her shirt, drawing lazy circles on her skin, setting her on fire.
“Do you know how you look when you have an orgasm?” he whispered in her ear, one hand slipping inside her trousers, his slender fingers slipping down and finding her wet folds, his other hand kneading her breast.
“Yes…” she moaned softly.
“You look absolutely beautiful,” he said, fingers rubbing her clit, “when you give yourself to me completely.”
She arched her back, her hands on his thighs, feeling him hard and ready for her.
They heard footsteps approaching and his hands slipped out of her clothes, straightening them. He turned her around in his arms, kissing her passionately.
“Let’s go home and finish this.”
She dreaded the walk back to his apartment, it would take way too long and she wasn’t sure she could wait.
Dave took her by the hand and they stepped outside. But instead of walking down the street, he pulled her along, behind him, onto the street, hailing a cab. They got in and Dave gave the driver the address, pulling her close to him. They could barely keep their hands off each other, but the curious looks from the driver in the rear mirror made them simply sit beside one another. They weren’t ready yet to share their love with the public yet.
Fortunately, the drive didn’t take long and Dave paid the driver. They got out and walked into the building, nodding to the grinning doorman. In the lift, Dave had her pushed up the wall again, attacking her mouth hungrily. The doors slid open with the usual bling and they hurriedly walked down the hallway to his door.
