Chapter 5

“Here you can use this desk” Dave told her guiding her over to the desk near the window, "It's near a power point so you can plug your laptop in and you'll get plenty of light here."

“Are you absolutely sure?” she asked looking up to him “I can manage for another couple of weeks at diners and the library if you're not.”

“Callan” he looked at her warningly.

“Ok, thank you this is really good of you, I'll be out of your hair in a couple of weeks once this paper is finished. ”

“Calli will you stop thanking me ok, you can earn your keep by making me and guys coffees all day.... It's ok I'm joking" he laughed as he saw her expression, “Come on I'll give you the guided tour, bathroom you already know, next to that there's a shower room.” he said walking across the studio to where they had come in “This is the kitchen area.” he opened a door on the left opposite the bathroom.”

“Mmm so I see” she answered peering in “Haven't you guys ever heard of using a bin?”

“Hey that's not me that's the other guys” Dave answered raising his hands in mock protest and grinning at her.

“Mmm right, so you never ever leave anything lying around then hmmm?”

“No never I swear” he said placing one hand on his heart and looking at her before bursting out laughing at her stare “Ok ok sometimes I do.”

“Ha just as I thought Gahan.”

“Ok I'm a bit messy at times, so shoot me.”

“I don't think that would go down too well with your fans do you ? So perhaps not.”

“Come on let me show you the rest of it.” he continued slipping his arm around her shoulders loving the way she was being herself with him again. “I'll show you the set up. These are the studio rooms with all our equipment in, laptops etc, don't ask me what half of it does I leave that to the others.”

“Others I thought it was just Christian and you?”

“No Philpott..sorry my friend Andrew is working with us too, he's taken off for a week or two so you'll meet him when he gets back.”

“Right.”

“That's Christians drum room” he pointed to the glass walled area “Oh I should warn you now” he laughed “Christian makes the strangest expressions when he gets carried away drumming, sometimes I'm pretty sure he's actually having orgasms in there by some of the faces he pulls.”

“Someone talking about me?” Came a voice from behind them.

“Yeah I'm just warning Callan about you and your orgasmic drumming.” Dave answered as Christian came over and joined them.

“Ignore him he's just jealous.” he turned to Callan smiling and holding out his hand “Nice to see you again Callan.”

“Yes it's nice to see you too”

“So Dave's giving you the guided tour then huh.”

“I've offered Callan the use of the studio to study in she can't really work where she's living at the moment can you honey?”

“Mmm ok” Christian looked at Dave surprised, “But won't it be a bit noisy here for her?”

“Compared to where I'm living at the moment Glastonbury would be probably quieter.” She sighed

“She needs somewhere just for a couple of weeks, besides we're just mixing the stuff and whatever at the moment so it's not going to be overly noisy. We'll just think of something else if it doesn't work out.”

“Ok, welcome aboard then Callan” Christian smiled placing a kiss on her cheek.

“And your real reason?” Christian whispered as Callan walked across the studio to sort out her stuff

“What?” Dave looked at him

“You suddenly being the good Samaritan, offering her somewhere to work, whats in it for you?”

“Nothing other than I like being around her, there's something about her I like and I just want to get to know her better.”

“Dave I've known you how long now and I've never known you behave like this before, what's really in it for you?”

“Nothing I just want to help her out” he glanced over at her “I'm not going to go into details but she's been through a rough time and I know what she's going through and how she feels so I just want to try and help her ok.”

“So?”

“So now maybe it's my time to pay back all the help that I took when I needed it most.”

“Ok so how much about you does she actually know?”

“Everything she needs to at the moment.”

“Everything?” Christian looked at him.

“What are you getting at?”

“Nothing.. look all I mean is I don't want to say anything about something she doesn't know, ok.”

“Like what?”

“You and Jen for instance, I take it she knows there's an ex on the scene.”

“Yes she knows about Jen and all that business, she knows I'm in DM although she's never heard of me.” he looked at Christian “And I'd like to keep that low key for the moment.”

“Ok.”

“Like I said everything she needs too at the moment.”

“And the other stuff?”

“The other stuff, the drinking yes she knows I've had problems but the drugs no not yet” he shot a glance over at Callan “Not that it's going to be cropping up in conversation is it?”

“Here no, but you've just said that she doesn't know anything about you right?”

“Yes so...?”

“So what happens if she decides to have a look on the internet to see what she can find about you, she'll stumble across it pretty easily, have you though about that?”

“I'll deal with that if and when it happens, it's too soon to tell her that stuff yet.”

“You think she won't understand?”

Dave shook his head “No she'll understand, but just now I don't want her knowing all that yet, I like the fact that I can be who I am now and that she doesn't know all that shit about me.”

“Ok but if you want my advice don't leave it too long, that kind of stuff always gets out." he shot Dave a glance before changing the subject " Right so are we going to do any work this afternoon or are we calling it a day for now?”

“Looks like we're working” Dave answered looking over to where Callan was sitting and seeing that she was already busy flicking through her folder making notes. “Show me how far you got whilst I was gone.”


Callan looked up from her laptop to see Dave and Christian in deep conversation over one of the screens. She sat watching him for a while still unable to believe that he was the age he said he was. Surely they were winding her up over it.. Opening a new tab on the screen she typed the words Dave Gahan into google and hit return.

Clicking onto the wikipaedia page that came up she scanned down the page God he is 46 she thought amazed, quickly she read further stifling a giggle as she saw an obviously very early photograph of Dave with who she presumed was the rest of his band. Checking that Dave was still working she continued reading only pausing to look up at him as she read about him modeling for J Lindeberg, yeah he had the looks to pull that off. Quickly she opened another tab, once again checking that Dave wasn't watching her and typed in J Lindeberg scrolling through their site until she found a Dave related article. Impatiently she muttered to her self and drummed her right index finger on the mouse as the site informed her it needed to open acrobat reader. Come come on she muttered stealing a glance at Dave. Feeling guilty about reading about him whilst he was in the room with her she got ready to shut down the screens if he showed any of coming over to her.

Holy Fuck was her first thought as two photos appeared on her screen obviously concert shots, she couldn't believe how sexy he looked Mmm I bet you get a few thousand women screaming after you every night on stage she smiled to herself. She opened the link leading to the photos of Dave modeling the collection and found herself fascinated by the tattoos she could see in the photos, she'd noticed the ones on his lower arms during dinner the night before but she'd never thought he'd have them on his body too. Clicking back to the wikipedia page she read down through his solo stuff, catching a movement out of the corner of her eye she quickly shut down the window and clicked back into open office

“Everything OK Calli?” he asked looking over at her

“Y..y.. yes thank you.” She stammered blushing at almost being caught.

“Good listen, I'm going to nip out and fetch some stuff from the deli do you want anything?”

“Could I have a black coffee please?”

“Of course honey” he smiled “And what do you want to eat?”

“I'm okay I'm not really hungry, I'm still full from lunch.”

“I'll be about 10 mins, if you need anything Christian will show you ok?”

“Ok”

As soon as he left the studio she plugged her headphones into the socket on her laptop and smiled “Ok” she whispered to herself “Let's have a listen to you then.”

Typing in his name again she scrolled down the sites displayed until she came to a you tube one clicked on one titled Saw Something and sat transfixed for a few seconds as the video came on the screen. Scrolling down the related videos she clicked on one with the name in the studio clips and giggled to herself as Dave came into view playing a guitar and miming to a song “Idiot “ she laughed to herself.

Glancing over towards Christian she typed Depeche Mode into the search box and clicked on the name Personal Jesus to be greeted with an opening shot of Dave dressed as a cowboy singing into the camera.

“Ok what's next? She smiled to herself stopping it 30 seconds in. She clicked on a couple more videos and then found some kind of documentary and decided to watch it “Aww baby Dave she giggled to herself as he suddenly appeared on the screen and watched the footage of him doing an early interview looking really nervous, nothing like the self assured person she'd met the day before. As the next clip of Dave came on the screen, she squinted hard and almost laughed out loud Oh Dave that just does not look good on you she thought looking at the skinny moustache across his top lip.

She looked at the next two titles, SOFAD interview and Home trying to decide which to click on first. Noticing it wasn't Dave in the foreground but some blonde guy curiosity got the better of her and she opened that one first, she watched for a minute or so taking in the difference between his and Dave's voice noticing that there was something vaguely familiar about the way the other guy sang. She glanced at her watch and judged she'd just got chance to watch the other one. Her mouse hovered over the words Dave Gahan, Johnny Vaughan SOFAD interview and she was just about to open it when she looked up just in time to see Dave coming back into the studio, quickly she shut the page down and removed her head phones still thinking of the image of Dave with that moustache.

“Something funny?” Dave asked seeing the expression on her face

“No, nothing, just something I read online that made me smile that's all.” She managed

“Must have been pretty funny then” he smiled setting her coffee down on the desk, “Oh and I bought you a muffin to go with it, is blueberry ok? You look like a blueberry type of girl.”

“Only my favourite type” she smiled back.
