Chapter 24
“After what I saw at home, I was simply devastated. I just hopped in my car and drove. I had no idea where the hell I was going. I could hear the horns of the cars and the fingers that the drivers gave me for not stopping at the red lights and stuff. I’m lucky that I didn’t crash on someone or something. I could have had a car accident! It was like my soul left my body. I felt like I was watching everything from somewhere above. Then I found myself on the highway. I was crying, cursing, yelling, gripping the wheel until my knuckles turned white… I was so angry with myself for being such a blind and not noticing what the hell was going on between Tommy and that bitch! She is my next door neighbour for God’s sake! I don’t know for how long I drove, then realised that I was running out of gas. I pulled the car aside and just sat there without doing anything. There was no house or people around and it was getting dark.” She took a sip from her wine.
“And?”
“Then I heard a car stopped next to mine. That was him.”
“Ohhh the lover boy came and saved the girl ha?” Jackie teased her friend. Angela giggled.
“Actually it wasn’t like that. For me he was just a damn good looking stranger with an expensive car who could also be a fucking killer like Christian Bale in American Psycho.”
“But you got into his car anyway!”
“Yes, because as being a helpless young woman stuck in my car without gas on the highway, there was a possibility of being raped by a filthy truck driver that had been driving for days, hungry for women except for the prostitutes if there are any. You know not every truck driver is Elvis.” Then she stopped to have her theory confirmed. “There aren’t prostitutes in the highway, right?”
“Nah I don’t think so, at least not so many.” Jackie put her finger on her lip as she was thinking. “They hang around in the city mostly.” If there was someone in the room listening to them, he would go like ‘How did the conversation come to this point?’ with a blank look on his face. But it was only normal for Angela and Jackie, they would talk about the useless details for hours like the weird characters in Tarantino movies. “There are more millions of men in the city. And men mean money to them.”
“You’re right. Anyway, where was I?”
“The American Psycho and the truck driver who possibly won’t be the new Elvis.” Jackie helped her friend to remember.
“Oh yeah thanks. Unfortunately my mind wasn’t in a good condition to compare which one was better to choose; being murdered by a sexy guy with British accent or being raped or abused by a truck driver.”
“I would go for the first one.” She shrugged her shoulder as if it was something normal.
“See? That’s why I got into his car. He said he was on the way to his summerhouse and he would drop me to a motel…”
“… to give you a good fuck?” she cocked her brow giggling.
“Jackie!”
“Ok ok I shut up.” She zipped her mouth.
“He said he would drop me to a motel so I would spend the night in safe and call someone to pick me up.” Then Angela couldn’t help but grinned. “But I’m sure ‘the fucking’ bit was already in his mind.”
Two women laughed at that as Jackie poured their glasses.
“The moment I got into his car, he came on to me. But he was clever, he knew whatever was wrong with me was something to do with a man. My husband of course, he saw my wedding band. He wanted me to tell him what happened but of course I refused. Being cheated on was humiliating enough, and telling this to a stranger was even worse.”
“But…” Jackie knew what was coming. Angela blushed.
“But he persuaded me and I told him everything. He is really hard to resist.”
“What did he say?”
“Surprisingly he was very understanding. He said he’d gone through the same thing. He told me what happened with his girlfriend who slept with his best friend when he was a teenager.”
Jackie didn’t say anything at first, it was like she tried to choose every word carefully.
“Are you sure he didn’t make this story up just to make himself seem good in your eyes? You know men don’t play fair.”
“No, I knew he was telling the truth, it was obvious when I looked into his eyes.” Somehow she trusted in Dave although they had known each other for a very short time. “Then he told me that his marriage wasn’t going good. He was tired of his wife’s stupid behaviours and her… uhm… surgical expenses. I’m sure there are some more problems but he didn’t go there. He said he’s gonna divorce although his marriage was already over in his mind.”
“What I want to know is; how did you treat him?”
“Like always, I gave him the cold shoulder. I didn’t let him come on to me…” she paused. “…or I didn’t let him know that I was actually enjoying his coming on to me.” she giggled.
“Oh you!” Jackie hit her friend with the pillow on the couch playfully. “So how did things get hot between you? I’m dying here, tell me the smoky bit. How did he manage to get you into his bed.”
Angela paused for a second.
I hope she doesn’t faint.
“Uh… let’s make a little correction here honey. Actually it was me who took him to bed.”
Angela was waiting for another NO WAY! from her but all Jackie could do was coughing; she choked on her wine.
