Chapter 9

IX.
- Six months later -
Her eyes are fixing the monitor and the graphic pen hurries over the layout she’s working at. Moving every now and then on her swivel chair she feels her back muscles stiffen from sitting at her desk for way too long again without taking a break. She forces herself to get up and stretch. Reaching for her glass with cranberry juice she stares outside the slightly dirty window – out off her 15th floor office. A huge RORO ferry has checked in at the docks. The tiny harbour launches are cruising busily around, stuffed with tourists for some tours through the warehouses area and the Alster dikes.
The chime of her mobile lets her flinch and she nestles in her jeans pocket.
„Hey, David! Insomniac?“
„Hi, Deb – so good to hear your voice again after all this time.“
„You sound depressed, luv.“
„Well, you know me when I’m touring with the guys.“
„Oh, where are you then at the moment? Have to admit I lost track after a while. Life keeps me busy here, too. I did read your emails though.“
Sensing the sombre timbre in his voice she rolls her eyes.
„Trouble with Jen?“
„You always know how to get straight at the jugular.“
„Hmh, it’s a never ending story, so it does not come as a surprise.“
„OK, I can hang up if it’s that boring!“
„Sorry, Dave! You know damn well how I meant it!“
Another deep sigh at the other end of the line.
„I’m in Paris and this city...well, it has it’s very special vibes. God, I had to remember our impromtu, short trip before you left! I never experienced it before, but...I had problems with Jenny in the bedroom...wasn’t able to give her what she needed. It didn’t take long to count one and one and she packed her stuff, jetting back to NY.“
„Well, I remember her face when she barged into the bedroom, finding us going at it. She really loves you, David. Don’t put more onto her shoulders. You are the one you are. I’m glad I got out off the line of fire.“
„It still makes me very sad, you know – but I understand it wasn’t a bearable situation for you. I’m glad though I could of been of help with that job back at your home base. Baron & Baron Inc. luckily is a huge network.“
„And you so conveniently are friends with a certain art director – I knew you were fudging things those days for me to get my foot in the door, but it’s OK now. I’m no longer angry with you....and, well, it’s a pleasant place to work here in Hamburg.“
„I’m glad to hear it, baby.“
„Have a gig tonight?“
„Yep. Have to leave for the sound check in about half an hour. Just feel drained.“
„Jennifer will get over it, trust me. We females are tough creatures when it comes to falling in love with a man for real.“
„Thank you, Deb. I hope you’ll find the right one soon. You need lots of love and strong arms to hold you – and you deserve it.“
„Stop it, Dave! I’m going to sob here soon.“
„Nah, chin up. It’s so good talking to you, hearing your lovely voice. I’m feeling a little better now.“
„You have your friends there with you. They care. Give my best regards to Chris, will you please?“
„Sure, will do. I just thought I shouldn’t whine at his shoulder on a daily basis.“
„Aha, so I had to jump in this time, tut, tut!“
A little chuckle and then a rustle.
„Deb, have to go, I’m afraid. Sooner or later we will meet again. If it’s just once a year. I carry you enveloped in my heart. Take care, OK?“
She slowly switches off her cellphone when the connection had died. Gosh, David! My heart is an envelope...her brain already starts whirling the words around and she dashes back to her computer to quickly open a new file.
