Chapter 4

“So how was she then?” Christian asked as Dave came into the studio the following morning.

“How was who?”

“The beautiful Callan of course”

“She was fine when I left her last night.”

“So she didn't stay over? I guess you went back to hers instead then, so how is what is she like in bed?”

Dave shook his head “I wouldn't know, we had a nice evening together and I dropped her off home afterwards.”

“You just took her home?”

“Afraid so mate, I'm sorry to disappoint you but nothing more than me giving her a kiss on the cheek went on last night.”

“Oh right knocked you back did she?”

“I didn't try”

“Hang on you took a girl out for the evening and you didn't try to get into her knickers,” Christian chuckled “Are you sure you're feeling ok?”

“I told you yesterday Chris, she's not going to be anything like that, I just like being in her company that's all”

“Yeah right” Christian raised one eyebrow skeptically ““So why not your usual dinner and then bed routine”

“Because it's not like that with her,”

“What so strictly friends then?”

“Yeah” Dave nodded “Strictly friends”

“Mmmm yeah like I'm going to believe that.”

“Christian believe what you want but I'm not looking for a relationship with anyone right now.”

“If you say so Dave” Christian smirked “So are you going to do any work today after bunking off yesterday or what?”

“In a minute” Dave replied powering up his laptop I just need to look up a couple of things on line first.”


Callan checked her reflection for about the 10th time in the glass panel of the door before pressing the buzzer. What was it about this guy that had her being like this. She couldn't remember the last time she'd actually taken time to apply some make up, she'd certainly gotten some surprised looks off the other guys in her class so she guessed she'd not worn it to college before. All morning she'd been itching to get to the studio, breathing deeply to calm her nerves she pressed the button and waited.

“Hello”

“Hello, is David there please?” She asked recognising Christians voice from the day before.

“Who is it?”

“My name's Callan, I left some stuff at the studio yesterday and I've come back to get it.”

“Oh Yeah of course, yes he's here, I'll just buzz you in.”

She heard the click of the door unlocking and pushed it open. As she stepped out of the lift Dave was already waiting for her “Callan” he leant forward and kissed her “How are you? How was class?”

“I'm good and class was boring” she answered suddenly feeling at ease now that she was in his company “And you?”

“Better now that you're here, sorry about that thing downstairs a minute ago, but we've had some fan buzzing the intercom every hour or so this morning asking if I'm here.”

“Oh right, that must be a really annoying does it happen a lot?”

“not really, buts it a pain in the arse when someone does it constantly, anyway come in” he said placing his arm around her shoulder and guiding her through to the studio.

“Do you have to shoot off again or are you ok for a while?”

“No I'm ok for time why?”

“Well we're about to break for lunch so if you want to join me we can go eat, that's if you haven't had something already”

Callan shook her head “I'm not sure David.”

“You have to eat, so come on I insist, anyway I want to run something by you.”

“Ok” she found herself agreeing

“Good I'll just grab my jacket and we can go.”



“So you wanted to ask me something David” Callan said as they sat in the deli with the sandwiches Dave had ordered for them.

“Yes” he smiled at her “It's nothing major so don't look quite so worried”

“Sorry”

“Firstly please call me Dave, I always feel like I'm in trouble or something when people call me David, so it's Dave ok.”

“So do you get yourself into trouble much then?”

“I have my moments darling” he chuckled arching one eyebrow at her.

“Oh a bit of a bad boy right then?”

“More than you'd ever believe but I'll save that topic for another day.”

“So what was it you wanted to say David... sorry Dave.”

“That's better, listen I was thinking about it this morning and I was wondering would it help you if you studied at the studio.”

“What your studio?” she asked surprised

“Yes my studio.”

“I don't know David I'm not sure, it's nice of you to ask but I couldn't possibly put you to any trouble.”

“Callan you wouldn't be, you've said how hard you find it is to study at yours and it's got to be better than trying to work in diners and stuff plus it'll save you dragging books and folders back and forth with you, there's room to leave everything there, at least say you'll think about it.”

“Well it would be a help and I wouldn't have to keep packing my stuff away every time I needed to go to the bathroom. Are you sure though?”

“Absolutely I wouldn't ask if I wasn't, good that's settled then” he grinned at her, “We'll sort you some space out this afternoon and I'll even make sure that you eat once in a while too.”

Thank you Dave” she whispered

“Callan there is no need to thank me I'm happy to help out that's all, it's not a big deal or anything”

“I know but it's good of you to help me out like this, I'm really grateful.”

“No problem now be quiet and eat your sandwich.” he grinned

“Yes Master” she answered back teasingly. “What did I say something funny?” she asked as he chuckled out loud again

“No it's fine it's just that... apparently that's the name some of my girl fans have for me, I'm the Master and they call themselves my slaves.”

“Really?”

“Yes they do” he nodded

“Do you ever get used to being followed by adoring fans and having girls throwing themselves at you? I mean it must be a really strange situation to be in.”

“It was strange at first, especially when we first set out, I mean we were what 18, 19 back then and it did go straight to our heads, all these young girls screaming at us and wherever we went. I'm not proud to admit this now Callan but for a long time I did take advantage of them if you know what I mean, there was always some woman desperate to sleep with us and we exploited them.” He paused for a minute running his fingers through his hair. “ There was a period in my life that I did a lot of bad stuff to people especially the female fans but I've changed I'm a different and I hope a better person now and now I see that a lot of our fans are so talented themselves and I have the utmost respect for them, especially the ones who saw what I went through and gave me their support regardless of the press and the way every negative aspect in my life was paraded in public by them.”

“Oh” she sad in a small voice.

“That's all in the past hon, so when I hear that they call me names like the Master or such I see it as a compliment.” he gave a small embarrassed laugh “Does that sound big headed or what?”

“Maybe” she laughed “It must be strange though reading what people say about you I don't think I'd like that.”

“It can be hard and extremely hurtful especially when it's something really close to your heart and the press will go out of their way to destroy it for that very reason, but on the other side there can be so many good things that come out of it too, so it's kind of swings and roundabouts.”

“I bet you've googled yourself though right?”

“That I can't answer” he grinned

“Oh Dave everyone has at some point, it's something you are unable to resist doing.”

“Ok ok yeah I googled myself.”

“See I knew it, so did you find anything interesting about yourself.”

“Maybe one or two things, other than that I can't say.”

“Mmm something juicy then?”

They both jumped as Dave's mobile rang, flipping it open as he picked it up he smiled “Text from Christian.” Callan watched him chuckle as he opened the message and began to read it to her “He's a cheeky bastard He says quote Lunch officially finished an hour and a half ago so are you coming back to work lazy arse or are you going to sit chatting with your girlfriend all day?”

“What time is it then?”

Dave glanced at his watch “3pm”

“But that means....”

“Yeah we've been here two and half hours”

“But...but that's impossible we can't have been”

“Callan honey we have though” he turned his wrist to show her “See for yourself.”

“But it only feels like half an hour or so.”

“I know, I guess it must be the good company I keep.” he winked. As he placed his phone back into his into his jacket pocket his fingers closed around a small box he'd slipped in there earlier that morning.

“Callan I almost forgot I've got something for you.”

Callan looked at him warily “What?”

“I sorted these out for you” he placed the box on the table in front of her and looked at her awkwardly “I hope you don't mind but I want you to have them.”

“What is it?”

Carefully he opened the box “Amethysts, they're meant to help with addictions and stress, someone bought them for me when I was dealing with mine, I thought they'd might help, you know with your problems.”

“Dave I can't take those from you.”

“Of course you can, I want you to have them, maybe they'll help you too.”

“But don't you want to keep them?”

“No I don't need them now, but I think they might just be what you need.”

Callan looked at his face and nodded, “Ok what do I do with them?”

Dave took the smaller of the two stones out which had been drilled through and made into a pendant “They need to be worn against your skin if possible to work well so wear this one under your top” he explained passing it to her and watching as she slipped the soft cord over her head, “That's it, now tuck it inside your shirt so it rests against your skin.”

“Like this?”

Dave nodded at her and took the second larger stone and a soft velvet pouch from the box “And this you carry around with you” he explained placing the stone in her hand.

Callan jumped as the stone touched her palm “What was that?”

“What?”

“I got some kind of... I don't know.. some kind of shock off it.”

“Like a vibration? That's good, sometimes it happens, it's a good sign.”

“Ok so what do I do carry it around with me in my pocket or something?”

“You can do but I was told it works better if it's against your skin, but seeing as you're already wearing one I don't think it'll hurt too much if it's in your pocket.”

“Ok maybe I can pick up a cord or something later for it.”she answered slipping it into the front pocket of her jeans She looked over at him “Thank you Dave,.”

“My pleasure, I just want to help you that's all.” he stood up from the table and held out his hand to her “Ready to go?”

Once outside they walked slowly back to the studio just talking about nothing in particular and stopping every now and again to look in shop windows.

“Oh my God look at that” she exclaimed looking at the window of a jewelery shop “I never seen anything like that before.”

“What” Dave asked moving over to stand next to her presuming she'd seen a bracelet or a necklace or something.

“That there look” she pointed excitedly.

“Callan you'll have to show me all I can see are a mass of charms and chains.”

“There see 2nd send tray from the left, look on the top row 4th charm along, look look.”

“Where? Where” he followed her gaze and then couldn't help but laugh and shake his head when he saw “I should have known it's a bridge.”

“I know it's amazing isn't it.

“Is it any bridge in particular?”

“No just a jewelery design that all, it's nice though, maybe I'll come back and buy it tomorrow when I have my credit card with me.”

“Will it still be here though.” he asked trying to gauge what her reaction would be if he offered to buy it for her.

“I should imagine so I wouldn't have thought it would be the most popular item in there”

“I tell you what let's go in and buy it now.”

“I can't Dave I haven't got my cards with me.”

He took a deep breath “I'll buy it for you honey.”

“You can't do that” she looked at him shocked.

“But I want to I want you to have it.”

She looked up at him “No David I can't let you buy me things, it wouldn't be right.”

“Why not?” he asked secretly pleased that she wouldn't let him, he'd been with too many girls in the past who would have dragged him inside at the mere mention that he wanted to buy them something.

“I'm sorry, please don't be offended, but we've only known each other 24 hours and I wouldn't feel comfortable about it, it's just the way I am you do understand don't you?”

Dave nodded at her “I guess so it's just that you seem to love it and I'd hate for you to miss the chance of having it. How about I buy it for you and you pay me back tomorrow.” he ventured trying another track.

Callan smiled and shook her head “No because I know that you wouldn't accept the money off me would you?”

Reluctantly Dave nodded “You got me sussed haven't you.”

She smiled and nodded “Within about two seconds, Dave it's incredibly sweet of you to offer, what I'll do is ask them if they'll hold it for me until tomorrow. I've got enough money on me to pay a deposit. Are you coming?” she asked pushing the door open.

“Yes” smiling Dave followed her inside.

As Callan was talking to the sales assistant about the charm Dave wandered over to another counter on the other side of the shop, as he was looking at the various items on display a small notice caught is eye, glancing over he saw that Callan was still deep in conversation with one of the assistants, quickly he scanned it and pocketed one of the small business cards just as Callan appeared at his side.

“Right I've finished now” she smiled at him.

“Ok ready to head back then?” He asked looking innocently at her

“Yes.”

Stepping out back onto the street they headed back towards the studio

“Dave are you sure I'm not going to get in the way if I'm going to be working in your studio?”

“Callan I've told you already there's plenty of space so stop worrying about it ok.”

“Ok” she glanced to her left and nudged him “I think someones trying to get your attention”

“Where?”

“Over there” she nodded towards her left hand side “That guy in the white top.”

“Oh right”

“I'm guessing he's a fan judging by the nervous look on his face.”

“Yes” he smiled as the guy approached him.

“Mr Gahan...” he began nervously “I just wondered if I could have your autograph please.”

“Yeah no problem” Dave took the paper and pen from the guys hand and signed his name.

“Thank you, do you think I could..” he held out a camera “Maybe your girlfriend could...” he looked at Callan who looked questioningly at Dave. Dave smiled and nodded back at her. “Sure no no worries.”

“Thank you” he handed over the camera to Callan who smiled at him, “You'll have to show me which button to press I'm hopeless with other peoples cameras.

“Mmm I bet you'd soon work it out if I was a bridge you wanted to photograph” Dave teased her, making the fan to look between the two of them in confusion.

“Ignore him, he thinks he's a comedian.” Callan smiled at the guy blushing slightly. “And luckily for me I'm not his girlfriend,” she turned towards Dave and stuck her tongue out at him “Just show me what to do and then I'll take a picture of you and funny guy over there.”

Dave looked at her, she's relaxing around me now he thought to himself and smiled, That's how I want her to be, I want the real Callan around me.

Carefully Callan took a photo of Dave and the fan and then a couple more of them as Dave chatted with him for a few moments before the guy thanked them both profusely.

“Aww you really made his day” She said “He was really nervous, but you really made him relax by the end.”

“Do you think so?”

“Yeah I don't think I'd ever have the nerve to go up to someone like he did, I'd just probably die on the spot if I came across Chris from the Editors in the street like that.”

“What about if it was Isambard Kingdom Brunel ?” Dave asked unable to resist the urge to tease her again.

“Oooh someones been doing their homework then,” she smiled “No you know what I mean, you were really sweet with that guy, he's going to remember that now for the rest of his life.”

“I don't suppose I've really thought of it like that before, but you do know he thinks you're my girlfriend don't you?.” he smirked “So by about 10pm tonight it's going to be all over the internet that Dave Gahan is dating again.”

“Not anymore it won't be, I put him straight on that score....What?” she asked as he grinned at her

“Calli you're adorable do you know that.”

“Well thanks.” she blushed “I don't think I've been called that before”

“Callan” Dave looked at her “There something about you I like and I hope we can become really good friends, what do you think?”

“I'd like that” she smiled.
