Dave scanned the faces of the people streaming through the arrivals gate searching for Callan, finally he saw of her and was surprised at the rush of excitement that flowed through him as he caught sight of her face again. He watched as she got nearer the gate, wearing a bright pink fleece and black skinny jeans she made her way towards him pulling a black suitcase behind her.
Waiting until she was away from the crowds of people milling around the entrance, he came forward and called her name.
“Callan.”
She turned towards the sound of his voice and he watched as her face lit up as she spotted him waving at her.
“Dave? Oh my god what are you doing here?”
“Thought you'd like a welcoming party.” he grinned easily pulling her to him and hugging her hard.
“Oh right and nothing to do with the fact Rosie and Jimmy's flight left before mine got in then?” she chuckled as he let go of her.
“Well maybe, I thought perhaps I could give you a lift save you getting a taxi.”
“Aww thank you, that's really sweet of you.” she smiled kissing him on the cheek.
“No problem.” For some reason he wasn't sure of he pulled her to him tight and just stood for a moment enjoying being with her again. “Hey you've changed your shampoo.” he remarked inhaling her hair.
Surprised Callan looked up at him “How did you know?”
“You just smell different, you've changed your perfume as well haven't you? It's Issey Miyake now isn't it?”
“Yes Dad bought it me as a welcome home present.”
“Is that all you've got?" he asked taking to her small case from her.
“I tend to travel light. I've got all the stuff I need here, so I just bought a couple of new outfits and make up over, oh and a parcel of supplies from my Gran, things she doesn't think I can get here, you know chocolate and stuff like that." she looked at him and giggled “She's so sweet, she doesn't realise you can actually buy half of the stuff she's given me here.”
“Aww she sounds lovely and you lost weight too didn't you?"
"Just a few pounds " she smiled "All that weight I put on because of you.”
“What?” he asked as she chuckled to herself and shook her head.
“You'll make someone a wonderful husband noticing things like that, and the perfume, do you know that?”
“Here we're on this floor” Dave stepped to one side as the lift door opened so that Callan could exit first. “Over here” he placed his hand on the small of her back and guided her off to the left.
“Where about are you parked?” she asked scanning the floor for his car.
“I've got a new car, well new old car...” he chuckled “The dark blue one over there see it.”
“Oh my God not the Aston Martin! That's not yours?” she stopped and looked at him “Is that it? The DB6 is yours?”
“Actually yes” Dave looked at her surprised by her reaction, “I got it a couple of days after you left.”
“It's gorgeous” she took off over the car park leaving Dave standing bemused for a few moments before he went to catch her up.
“I take it you like her.”
“It's a she?” Callan looked at him with a grin.
“Yeah beautiful and temperamental like all the women I love. So what do you think?” he watched as she lightly touched the bodywork,
“She's wonderful, how many miles to the gallon do you get from her?”
“Hey when did you get to be such a petrol head? I don't know I just fill her up when she gets to empty.”
“David” she looked at him and rolled her eyes “You have a car as beautiful as this and you don't know.”
“Look I get in fill her up, drive her round, it gets to empty, fill her up, what else am I meant to do?” he smirked.
He opened the boot and placed her case inside before shutting it with a loud clunk. “So do you want to see inside?”
“Yes please.”
David unlocked the door and Callan slipped into the car inhaling the smell of the leather seats as she did so.
“Mmmm it smells gorgeous” she murmured as she ran her right hand over the dashboard, loving the feel of it under her fingertips.
“Hey will you stop having orgasms about my car.” he chuckled “And shut the door.”
“Yeah sorry,” she leant over and pulled her door to with a satisfying clunk, “Listen to that sound.”
“I presume you approve of her then.”
“I love it.”
“Well like I said she's a bit temperamental, doesn't always start, she's going back to the garage again later.” he turned the key in the engine only to get a small click. “Like now, see what I mean?” he smiled apologetically at Callan as he tried it again and it still wouldn't start. “Sorry I'll have to phone the breakdown people and get us towed.”
“Don't not yet” Callan shook her head, “ Have you got any plastic gloves in the boot.”
“There maybe some, why?”
“Let me see if I can get it started first.”
Dave looked at her “And how are you going to do that missy?”
“Just open the bonnet and get me the gloves.”
“Do you actually know what you're doing?” he asked handing her the gloves.
“Mmm did you say something?”
“I said do you know what you're doing?”
“Yes, of course” she smiled as she pulled them on “Is there a little tool kit or something back there?”
“I think so do you want me to get it?”
“Yeah if you could” she retreated under the bonnet again and Dave just stared at her for a couple of moments before heading off to the back of the car.
“Will this do?” he asked returning 30 seconds later.
“Oh it's ok I don't need it now.”
“Ha I knew it I knew you were having me on.”
“Turn her over .”
“What?”
“Try starting her now.”
“Okay” Dave grinned playing along with the weird game she seemed to be playing, he slid in behind the wheel and turned the car over almost choking with shock as the car coughed into life.
“What the fuck” he muttered as the bonnet closed and he looked up to see Callan standing in front of him grinning.
“See I told you I'd fix it didn't I?“ she laughed climbing back into the passenger seat.
“But .... how?? But...” he began speechless.
“My Dad had one of these when I was younger, we used to spend hours restoring her together, it used to drive Anna mad, especially when we used dismantle pieces of it on the kitchen table, instead of in Dads workshop.”
“You never cease to amaze me do you know that?”
“It's nothing” she smiled “When you've had a father like mine you learn how to do all these things.”
“So how was it?” he asked as they sat waiting to pull out from the car park.
“Just like I told you on the phone, Oh David she's awful, she really is.”
“Is she really that bad?”
“God yes, I've wanted to Dad to get a new girlfriend for so long but honestly I think he's lost his marbles or something.”
“What is she like then?” he asked as the lights changed and he pulled out into the service road.
“Loud mouthed, self opinionated, a total bitch I don't know what he sees in her.”
“Is she much younger than him?”
“No that's the thing if she was I could understand it if he's gotten a younger girlfriend but she isn't, I'd imagined her to be like Anna, but she's the total opposite.”
“She has a hard image to live up to then?”
“No Dave I'm not comparing her to Anna, I just thought after her and my Mom he'd choose someone like them, I've tried liking her but I can't.” she looked out of the window and sighed.
“Baby do you think you might be a little jealous of her being with your Dad?” he asked gently.
“No” she turned back and looked at him “Dads had a few dates since Anna, and I've been saying he should meet someone new but it's just her. That trip to the spa was horrendous, thank God Justine came with us else I had killed her or something, at least Jus made it bearable.
“She can't be that bad.”
“Dave she can, I know I sound like a total spoilt brat but I'm not honestly, she’s just trying to take advantage of him, oh and you know how I said she wants him to sell our house.”
Dave nodded slowing down and indicating right.
“Well I overheard her talking to her friend and she wants him to sell m ...the beach place as well.”
“I didn't know you had a beach house?”
“Oh it's nothing special, just a little place, but I love it there and so did my Mom, it used to belong to her Grandma, so it's kind of special, it's the one bit of my Mom I've still got.”
“Do you think he'll sell it?”
“No” she gave a little smile at him “He can't, it was never transferred to my Dad when my Mom died, so she can't get her hands on it.”
“So apart from all that? It was ok.”
“It would have been better if I'd gotten more time alone with my Dad she even monopolised that, I wanted to spend last night with him, but she arranged what she called a bonding session for us. Wanted us to share secrets and that and you'll never guess what she's got this huge crush on Martin from your band.”
“Has she really?” Dave grinned.
“Yeah and she told me in great detail everything she wanted to do with him, if you know what I mean.” she sighed and rolled eyes “And it wasn't pretty I can tell you.”
“I take it you didn't tell her about me then.”
“Hell no, I mean she obviously knows we're friends cause I've told my Dad all about you but I didn't mention the name of the band.”
The bleeping of her phone sent her scrabbling through the front pocket of her rucksack.
"Hey new phone?" Dave asked glancing across as she pulled it from her bag,
“Yeah it was a birthday present from my Dad."
"It was your birthday whilst you were away, why didn't you say anything?"
